SEX IS NOT EVERYTHING BUT EVERYTHING IS SEX

In her short film Julie Burkardt is not interested in sexuality as an explicit subject. Instead, she focuses on what precedes it: tension, projection, uncertainty, and longing. Her 15-minute film inhabits that in-between space where intimacy begins to emerge.

Set in the South of France, the film follows six young people through fleeting encounters and emotional undercurrents. Desire appears less as a concrete act than as a state of absence — something that becomes tangible precisely because it remains out of reach.

The camera stays close to details: fine hairs glowing in backlight, skin, fabrics, lingering glances. Julie does not portray bodies as objects, but as sensitive surfaces. Nothing is explained, yet everything feels charged.

Written during a flight between Basel and Nice and filmed in Saint-Paul-de-Vence with an international cast and crew who met for the first time on set, the project carries the fragility and spontaneity that define the film.

In post-production, Julie worked closely with editor Santiago Laurant in Paris and, together with Alfredo Diaz, developed the film’s atmospheric sound world at the Madrid-based mixing studio Best Digital.

Now beginning its festival journey, «SEX IS NOT EVERYTHING BUT EVERYTHING IS SEX» marks Julie Burkardt’s first work as a director, screenwriter, and producer. She is also exploring independent forms of presentation and continues to develop her work across disciplines, both on screen and behind the camera.
